With Independent candidates gaining ever more support in the U.S.A., could we see a swing away from the established Parties here in the U.K.?
We have seen the virtual collapse of the Conservative party and unprecedented levels of disapproval with the Labour Government despite a spectacular General Election win.
People often say they now don't know who to vote for; having become disillusioned with a Party of whom previously they may have been life long supporters.
I am well aware of an established assumption that we need Political parties for the avoidance of chaos and a focus on policy....but not everyone shares that view.
I believe that something new needs to be tried if democracy is not to become a sham. What if all MPs were independent of any Political party? For one thing, they could all be paid the same thus eliminating the personal financial incentive to win Power. Another point is that voting in the Commons would always be a matter of conscience as there would no longer be "Whips" to force MPs into following the Party line.
There are doubtless many more advantages... as well as potential problems ...but I will respond to others if they wish to have their say.
