Every so often, this subject of 'reparations' crops up. The bill always coming to the UK... Funny, that. This time, the latest round of demands is coming from a Jamaican government delegation.
Would they like to hear my response to this? No? Well, I'm afraid they're going to get it anyway:
Neither apology nor reparations are due. British men died fighting to abolish slavery. The sheer ignorance of these people continuing to ignore this fact is staggering. No one alive was an enslaver or enslaved by the defunct British Empire. In 2026 people are not going to be paying for something that ended in 1834.
This is absurd. History happened, whether you agree or disagree it happened. Lets start with a simple question - who did the British buy the slaves from? The answer? Jamaican slave owners. Seek representations from the source. I'm assuming they've not submitted a claim to the countries that sold their own people into slavery?
If that money was actually given to them, every single penny would be funnelled into the bank accounts of the leaders there. They’re grifters, nothing more, trying to demand free money so they can live in luxury while their people continue to live in poverty. With all the foreign aid and infrastructure already paid for by Britain, I think Jamaica might owe Britain some money, actually.
Here's another idea - a bill for the entire state of Jamaica we built for them, with contingencies to repossess upon failure to deliver. A fair exchange. £7.6bn Vs a sovereign island worth a trillion or more.
They need to stop being victims and move on with their lives.

Being pessimistic is a good thing - that way you’re never disappointed.
